Squeeky Feet!

Today we learned how to squeek our feet! It's really quite simple! Just follow these three steps:

1) Be placed on the floor (plastic mats) naked by your unsuspecting mother;

2) Pee;

3) Move your feet rapidly back and forth.

Not only is this lots of fun for yourself, but the dog gets excited by the noise too!

Edith Piaf

Today we slept a lot (as usual!), but we found time to run some errands uptown and take a walk to the park. But tonight, we spiced things up and danced around the living room to Edith Piaf! The boy wasn't in the mood, but I was! :)

Walking in the Rain

What was supposed to be a picnic in the park with the Mothers Circle, ended up being a race home in the rain! The little guy had blankets on him for most of it, but when they got soaked we took cover until the rain let up. Note to self - always take the rain cover!

Hosting a BBQ!

It downpoured all morning, however, the weather held out for us to have our baby group over this afternoon. We met up at the splash pad and the babies had their fun in the water. Then we headed back to our place for dinner. Dad cooked up burgers for the parents and the babies had their cereal and veggies. Can't believe all the babies are 6-7 months of age already. We have one almost crawler, and a few babblers. babababa....

Surviving an Earthquake?

Well, today's activity was supposed to be about enjoying Lake Ontario, however, at 1:40 this afternoon and earthquake hit us! We only felt a slight shaking of the ground, but exciting nonetheless! Chippy was actually sleeping, so he missed it. But I made sure to tell him about it after he got up!

This morning we went for a walk down to Lake Ontario and watched the people and boats going by. Well, I watched the people and boats. Chippy was only interested in eating grass. :-)

Vintage Toys

Today we spent a good hour playing with vintage toys! These are toys that we dusted off from my parents cupboard ... toys I remember playing with as a kid. No bells and whistles ... just plain old fashioned plastic toys. Chippy had a great time hitting, throwing, and eating the toys. He still has his favourite toys that are new, but when I present him with a mix of new and old toys, he'll often go for the old toys. These are toys 'made in the USA by Fisher Price ... a division of Quaker Oats'. You know you're old when...

Making and Eating Homemade Veggies!

[Monday's post - too lazy!] Mmmm... this past weekend we made sweet potatoes and peas for our little hungry man. Although we get a disgusted look when he first tries new food, he ends up opening his mouth wide for the rest! It was easy and fast to make the food. In addition to eating some of the veggies fresh, we were able to freeze it for later. The problem now is just getting him to stay awake long enough in the day to eat!

No Goal!

Today's activity was not very educational ... oops! Since ma and pa wanted to watch the England 'football' match, the boy was forced to don his England kit (Arsenal actually) and watch his first footy game! Luckly, we have a smart boy and he realized that TV isn't good for him at this age, so he only watched for about 5 minutes and fell asleep for the second half. Likely better that way as England was rubish and ma and pa lost £3 on the game! I was winning £17 up until the last 2 seconds of the game when the final corner was won by England ... arg.
Anyway, there we have it. Our first footy game ...

Playdate in the Park!

Today's activity was extra fun! We walked down to the park and met up with some of the babies we know from our mommy groups. (Sidenote - I love living next to a park!) Everyone brought treats and we spent a really nice afternoon in the shade. The babies seemed to enjoy watching each other as much as the parents enjoyed swapping stories and gripes! Since the other babies are a few weeks older than Chippy, they had lot of helpful advice on feeding and milestone progression. The brave babies even tried their feet in the splash pad!!

Mesh Feeder = Messy!

Yesterday, while out grocery shopping, I came across a pack of mesh feeders for babies. I had read about them before, and heard lots of good things about them, so decided to give it a try! The idea is that you can put food in the mesh bag, and the child can feed themselves by mouthing on the food through the bag. It can also work for frozen food when Chippy starts teething.

The verdict -- an overwhelming success! I put mango and banana in it today and he completely devoured it! He cried when he had finished it - but he also cried when I tried to take it away to replenish it!

All that was left was some stringy bits inside the bag. Well, that and juice all over his hands, face, clothes, seat, tray, floor, dog ....

Another Use For Playpen Toys

When having our daily 'naked time' today, I discovered the toy arch for his playpen under his crib. Chippy has been relegated to the bottom ranks of his playpen after he became too big for the top bassinet, so the arch has not been used for a while.

With the arch just out of Chippy's reach, he was having fun extending forward to try and grab the elephant heads. He could touch them with his fingertips but couldn't quite get a good grab on them. From behind, I blew on the heads which made them sway back and forth. He giggled at this and was finally able to grab a hold! While he's not yet crawling, he definitely has the desire to grab things beyond his reach (and put them immediately in his mouth!).

Doctor Appointment!

Well, it isn't exactly new and creative, but we had our 6 month Dr's appointment today which provided enough excitement to last us the rest of the day! We walked down for the appointment with a rain cover on the Quinny because it decided to pour rain at the time we left. Chippy was very happy throughout the whole appointment, except for when it came to his shots! After the first shot, he went beet red and let out a long wail. Then went the second needle! Not a happy little camper, but mommy kissed it all better! :-)

Stats for the day were:
17.5 lbs
71cm height
46 cm head circumference

They didn't go through the percentiles with us this visit, however, from a quick look at our baby book, it looks like he's 50th percentile for weight and close to 95th percentile for height and head circumference.

I wish they had reviewed these stats with us more closely, as now I'm a bit concerned about his weight compared to his other stats. The nurse practitioner who saw us wasn't all that helpful in answering our questions either. Essentially, she had no professional advice - just 'follow your instincts'. arg...

Forgot my camera, so the included pic is of him sleeping immediately upon returning home!

Breakfast in the Park

We woke up today to a gorgeous sunny day. What better to do than have breakfast in the park! I packaged up breakfast for me and a banana for Chippy and off we went to the park - Chippy in his little red wagon, and me in the lead. As of a few days ago, Chippy is able to sit up on his own for several minutes at a time. This will be a perfect opportunity for him to practice his new skill!
Chippy was great! He was watching everything - people walking and biking by, the trees swaying in the wind, and feeling the dew in the grass (with his head as much as his hands!). Chippy downed all his banana with gusto! So far we know that we love banana and we hate avocado - sorry Dad! We cleaned up quickly with the help of a plastic bag, and continued on our journey. Fog horns were blowing all morning, but we investigated down by the water and the fog was just about gone by around 9am. By the time we got home, we were ready for a nap! Yeah!

Six Months Already!!??

I can't believe it has been six months since little Chippy was born. I say little, but he was 9 lbs 2.5 oz at birth! The weeks and months since his birth have melded together with little to show (except for a happy healthy 6 month old!). Like many, I wish I had taken the time to document these exceptionally rewarding / challenging / happy / frustrating times. With exactly six months left in my maternity leave, I have decided to take action!

I have challenged myself to write a blog that will detail our adventures over the next six months. Here's to the next six months!
